The capital city of California, Sacramento is located in the northern part of the state’s expansive Central Valley. In addition to being the seat of government for the Golden State, it appeals to outdoor lovers and history buffs alike.

Find riverfront restaurants, bars, museums, theaters, and quaint shops in Old Sacramento. The architecturally beautiful California State Capitol Museum is free to the public and open daily. Continue the history lesson with tours of the Leland Stanford Museum (built in 1856), Governor’s Mansion (the former home of 13 governors), and Sutter’s Fort (formerly a trading post, a rehabilitation point for Donner Party survivors, and refugee camp for people displaced by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake).

During warmer days, venture down to the Sacramento and American rivers to boat, water ski, kayak, and fish. Families can walk the crooked mile at Fairytale Town or explore Effie Yeaw Nature Center, located within the American River Parkway. The California State Fair, which comes to town each July, features carnival rides, games, animals, concerts, and fried food on a stick.
